230 hp, 6 cylinders and I am underwhelmed
Having had two new additions to the family in as many years, the time had come to re-asess the practicalities of the Spider having owned it for 7 years.
I still want a convertible but a 4 seater, so had narrowed it down to the 3 Series, Audi A4 or Saab 9-3 Aero. I only do about 3 - 4k per annum so it is a fun/treat vehicle.
Off I trotted for some test drives yesterday.
First up was the Saab. Nice car, bit different, 210bhp, reasonable mid range punch but it just did n't light any fires. Induction, engine and exhaust note totally dialled out - just felt soul less however competent.
Next up, a 3 series 330 M sport (petrol). 230 bhp and 6 pot - this should punch it out I thought. But alas no, it felt very leaden, with heavy steering, bit of a growl but nothing to really make the hairs on your neck stand up and even with 230bhp it just did n't feel quick or responsive, just lazy - like most 6cyls I have tried.
In fact I jumped back in my Spider afterwards("only" a Twinnie) and it felt so eager, agile and alive by comparison (to a 330 M Sport !!!!) it was smile inducing.
So where to next? Keep the Spider and buy a "practical" runaround comes to mind at the moment!
