I've always loved the GTV Aero and when I saw the price of this one I couldn't resist. Its my intention to make this one as minty as possible. I think its going to be a long journey....
Here's the story so far....
I picked up a Nuvola Blue 1999 GTV V6 Aero yesterday from a very snowy Welsh village and drove it all the way back to the Midlands. It was a heck of a journey because the windscreen washer had run out of water and we couldn't open the bonnet. I had to keep pulling over and cleaning the windscreen with handfulls of snow!
I got the car for a very good price and knew it wasn't going to be perfect but it was in a heck a state. The previous owner owned a Rotweiller (or similar) type of dog and the whole
of the interior was covered in muddy doggy footprints, the car was about as messy as it could be and clearly neglected by its owner. However, as it was a good price and the engine seemed very sweet I could look past most of that. It also has a nice quad-effect (actually just a double) stainless exhaust which sounds great.
This morning I gave the interior a complete wash down followed by a good polish of all the plastics, leather and glass. Its looking much much better now but it needs a new centre console (armrest hinges broken and its generally really rough) and a new carpet or a very very good cleaning session.
I also washed the car down and the exterior (and wheels) are surprisingly good - just a few carpark dings I can hopefully get a dentman to do a repair on. There is also some untidy paintwork/touch up around the drivers keyhole - may need some more attention there...
I also eventually got the bonnet open so I could check the fluids (all fine) and the general condition of the engine bay (very corroded and mucky!)
I now have a few immediate issues to sort and I wonder if anyone could give me some hints and tips;
1) The V6 engine usually pulls very well and cleanly, however sometimes it hesitates. Any ideas?
2) The door glass doesn't seem to quite seal properly against the door rubbers. Is this common and does this mean new doors rubbers or is there a fix?
3) Any idea how much a new carpet would be and if they're even available still?
4) Its quite tricky to get into 5th gear occasionally. I've heard there is a nut that comes loose (mentioned in the buyers guide). Does anyone know anything about this or am I looking at a new selector mech?
My immediate priorities are to get the oil and filter changed (I'll be getting my local Tyre Sales branch to do that who charge £49 for Mobil 1 15w50 fully synth and filter) and then the cambelt/pulleys/tensioners etc... The cambelt was only changed 7k ago, but that was almost 3 years ago. Going by the very poor condition of the drivebelt I can see (alternator air-con etc) the cambelt must be very poor too (as well as the tensioners etc possibly).
I'd like this to be the start of a "restoration" thread that I update as I go along. I hope thats ok.
Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.
I'll try and put some pics on of the car as I collected it later..
