No - you need standard KKL lead for all ECU connections on phase1 cars - no modding needed!
But of course you gotta find each of the individual 3-pin diagnostic plugs around the car..
Here's info off FiatEcuScan for phase 1 Spider/GTV 2.0TS:
(KL = KKL lead, OBDKey is alternative to KKL lead, 3-Pin = 3-pin adaptor)
Bosch Motronic M2.10.3 Injection (2.0TS 16V) |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT| KL OBDKey 3-Pin
Bosch Motronic M2.10.4 Injection (TS 16V) |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT| KL OBDKey 3-Pin
Bosch ABS 5.3 |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT| KL OBDKey 3-Pin
TRW MY97 Airbag (2F-2P) |INFO|DTC|PRM| KL OBDKey 3-Pin
- so std KKL + 3-pin adaptor good for both engine ECU types, ABS ECU and Airbag ECU.
But note that by '98 (phase 2) it had changed, and you DO need mod'd KKL lead:
(KL = KKL lead, KL1/KL3 = mod'd KKL leads, ELM & OBDKey are alternatives to KKL lead, A1/A2 = 16-pin adaptors if you don't have mod'd KKL)
Bosch Motronic M1.5.5 Injection (TS '98) |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT|ADJ| KL ELM OBDKey
Bosch Motronic Me7.3.1 EOBD Injection |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT|ADJ| KL ELM OBDKey
Bosch Motronic Me7.3.1 EOBD Injection (Outside EU version) |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT|ADJ| KL ELM OBDKey
Bosch ABS 5.3 |INFO|DTC|PRM|ACT| KL1 OBDKey1 A1
TRW MY97 Airbag (2F-2P) |INFO|DTC|PRM| KL3 OBDKey3 A2
TRW MY97 Airbag (2F-2P-I) |INFO|DTC|PRM| KL3 OBDKey3 A2
- so to read Airbag ECU if you've got phase 2 car you'd need switchable KKL lead (KL3) with switches set to 'airbag' OR
std KKL lead + Adaptor cable 2
N.B. the INFO/DTC etc stuff above is telling you what you can do with FiatEcuScan once you get connected, i.e.
INFO = display basic ECU/car info
DTC = Display Trouble Codes (i.e. stored ECU errors)
PRM = display selected ECU parameters (i.e. live sensor data)
ACT = force trigger selected actuators (i.e. test if ECU can control bits of your engine)
ADJ = adjust selected ECU parameters (e.g. increase idle speed)
For e.g. using PRM lets you find out the 'real' mileage of your car! (see if odometer is lying!!).
And using ACT on a phase 1 car you can spin up the radiator cooling fan by pressing button on laptop!! Kinda cool! Or maybe I'm just a geek
