Electric Hood Problem

Hi all

Newbie here looking for a GTV Spider...

I went to look at one today and the main niggle was the hood.

Its a electric one but does not fully work, this is waht happens;

Button is pressed in the cabin

Windows go down

Rear section lifts

Then nothing...i gather the "top" should lift at this point, alas nothing happens.

Firstly, any idea what the problem is? secondly, can the hood be operated manuallly?

There is probably a leak in the main hood rams. Since the rear cover is lifting, then the hydraulic pump is running and there is sufficient fluid in the reservoir for the 2 hood cover rams to operate. Since nothing further happens there is insufficient fluid to operate the other rams. The hood hydraulics work from an electrically driven pump which is behind the trim in the cubby hole behind the seats on the left hand side. The reservoir is on the back of the pump.

Yes you can operate the system manually. Just behind the drivers seat there is a plastic cover under which are 2 buttons. One operates the latch which allows you to raise the hood cover and the other operates the hood lock which locks the back of the hood down when you have raised it manually.

The hydrulic fluid is difficult to obtain, many Alfa or Fiat dealers do not stock it. However, Perrys in Aylesbury do. Look in the archives - there are lots of other threads about hood problems.

Most problems are around the gearbox ( with two wires attached ). On some the plastic cog strips and needs to turned 180 deg or replaced - someone on this forum makes better ones. Sometimes wires jump off at ends. Sometimes the manual lever gets stuck. Sometimes the motor on the gearbox fails. Never heard of the hydraulic system being a problem.

hi there we had the same problem with our hood and it was found the motor was faulty.it would lift the back like yours but would go no further so on investigation with the motor the motor was sticking and not enough umff to lift the rest of the hood tap the motor with a hammer and it burst into life revealing a electrial fault so a new motor was fitted under the warranty we had with the car hope this helps cheers mark g.

Hey, I do mine manually, its quicker than auto, When we got my car the hood wasn't working, turned out it had no hydraulic oil in the unit. It works now, but it's still quicker to manual it. (personally anyway)
