Just thought I'd share my GTV buying/ownership experience.1999 phase 2...2.0TS...Silver.
18 months ago I saw what I thought was the perfect GTV on ebay but being 200 miles away couldn't really check it out.The owner seemed very straight about the car.I noticed a lot of bids on it so in an emotional "I will not be beaten" moment I won it.
It was advertised with only ONE red key and no service history, apparently lost by a previous owner however the seller was very straight about this. When I went to see the car I was very impressed,it had clearly been very well maintained...and despite 118 000 showing on the clock I drove away happy.Travelling home I stopped at a beauty spot in Gloucstershire(by Birdlip) a place with stunning views.I spent the whole 20 minutes just walking around the car, admiring it from different angles.Never even noticed the view
Stunning looking thing. When I got home I gave it a complete going over and was very satisfied.I had the cambelt kit done immediately. Two weeks later my clutch pedal was on the floor one morning. Here we go I thought.Clutch slave cylinder,£70 fitted.Since then it has barely cost me a dime.£50 to get through it's last MOT,two excessively coroded brake pipes. It uses about 3mm of oil in between changes, comfortably returns 30+mpg,starts first time every time, goes in a straight line, stops in a straight line, bodywork is great, people come and chat all the time on car parks.Ok I've got a overheating issue now that crops up every few months
...I am quite sure it's just an airlock.....but I honestly believe that it is not absolutely critical to have FSH IF the car is sweet and the owner is genuine.I have done 20 000 and it's been fabulous. My friends thought I was mad buying off ebay let alone an ALFA but they now admit I got very lucky.Excellent car, such a cruising machine on the motorway too....and costs nothing to run....
A lot of people seemed terrified of buying an Alfa but my experience has been great...although yep I probably did get lucky.
