I run my Spider at 36/34. The "correct" pressures per the manual gave too light a feeling to the steering and was downright scary going around wet roundabouts, or taking off at wet junctions.
I did n't find it affected the ride much either way - the Spider is crashy on all but the smoothest roads and 2psi ain't gonna change that. Tyre wear has remained very even. The sweet spot on pressures will also be very tyre dependant. On hard walled Goodyear GSDs, 38 will be purgatory. On my nice soft Ultracs they ride a lot more comfortably anyway with the same like for like tyre pressures.
If I were hooning it around and doing a lot of high speed motorway then I would go with the recommended pressures - as I can see that tyre wear and tyre longevity might be affected if you are driving it on the edge.
