Non engaging starter motor?
Car started fine this morning, I drove it to the petrol station and filled up. It started fine there as well. I then drove it for about 40 miles (the only problems I encountered were people driving too slowly) and stopped in a supermarket car park for about 5 minutes.
When I came back out, I turned the key and although I'm pretty sure the starter motor was making a noise (i.e. it there was a whirring / spinning sound), it did not sound as though it was engaging with whatever it is supposed to engage with (the flywheel?) and it would not start. The noise was consistent whether the clutch was depressed or not and I even tried to start it in gear (with the clutch up) but it made no difference.
I'm pretty sure that it's not engaging and am going to go back to the car to try it again (I left her about an hour and a half ago). I will also take a hammer and a length of wood to see if I can tap the starter motor. However, I just wanted to see if anybody had any thoughts / advice on this?
(The wood can always be fashioned into a stake to drive through the engine if I get really hacked off with it....)
