This seemed a bit odd to me so i thought i would throw it out there to the collective knowlege on here.
My gtv was running a bit cold during cruise on the motorway (somewhere around 65 degrees). Easy i thought, change the stat, nice easy job.
The thing is that when i got the old stat off i found what you can see in the pic???09102009351.jpg
The inner workings of the stat were completely gone?
Has this happened to anybody else on here?
I feel i'm faced with a couple of options,
1 The old stat was re-fitted by somebody even though they knew it was buggered?maybe to keep the temp of the engine down at some point??not sure about this?
2 There are loads of bits of old stat floating about in my coolant system
Either way its not good.To top it all off when the coolant had drained out of the expansion tank there was loads of what looked like emulsified oil.there isnt one of those little smiley face dudes for what i felt like at that moment.
I cleaned out the expansion tank and drained the system before fitting the new stat and refilling/bleeding the expansion tank again.
I've given it a few days and a few drives and all seems fine. The temp is good, there has been nothing oil like or anything else turn up in the expansion tank and she drives as good as ever.
so i guess the question is has the stat killed my head gasket or have i just had a close call?
and has anybody else come across an empty stat housing?
cheers for ant input
