Thanks guys for the replies so far - much appreciated, hope to drag a bit more info out of you if i can thumbs:
if you have checked all the fuses and switchs, then i would go for the motor
i have just repaired mine in a fashion,
the 2001 models, have micro switchs which make the window drop before u can open the door.
these mechanisims are quite hard to get hold of unles u take to alfa, then its around £250
but i got a mechanisim from a ealier ,model and altered the stops so it stops just b4 the very top.
Initially both my windows didn't work, so I got hold of some working mechanisms from a scrappers because I thought it would be a straight replacement job, but when taking off the door cards the passenger side started working as normal (including drops) as soon as I activated the micro switch on the drivers
side mechanism (it was stuck in an in-between position neither fully in or fully out)
Anyway I figured 1st port of call was to hook up the new mechanisms before taking the windows out etc just to make sure they would work - when hooked up to the passenger side electrics they both worked, when hooked up to the drivers side neither worked. This makes me unsure if it is the motor at fault.
I also checked the window switches by swapping over the connections at the drivers side, and the drivers switch did then operate the passenger window so I'm convinced it's not them.
Of course I've checked the relevant fuses on the main board and the auxilary board just above it as well and they're ok, so I think I'm left with this control unit and possibly the motor. What do you reckon?
have you checked the multipin plug from the door to the a-post pillar?
unplug, clean and plug back in again.
Not sure which multipin plug you're referring to, are these the ones that connect directly to the window switches?
The N38 unit that your after, lives under the dash, behind the glovebox. It is purple in colour if my memory is correct
Thanks for this, although it sounds like a pain to get to! Have you replaced this control unit in your car? Not at all sure if it will do the job, but I'm just going to try and test the component as shown in the tech manual and see what I can diagnose.
