GTV Knocking Issue... Help?
My GTV (Phase 1 2.0 TS) started knocking underneath about 2 or 3 weeks ago. When it first started it was intermittant, when i drove over 60 for a couple of mins it would almost shake it off and be ok for a bit. It has started to become more consistant now...
The knock only occurs under acceleration. Revving the engine doesn't lead to a knock, nor does coasting on the clutch or out of gear. (Obviously not my normal driving style, just trying to identify the source.)
I thought it might be something clutch or gearbox related, but wasn't in a hurry to get it checked out because I've been busy and it hasn't affected performance, nor has it been happening all the time.
I took it to a local garage today in the absence of a nearby specialist or the time to take it to one.
They have said they can't find anything visible, but have a hunch that it is the nearside driveshaft.
I wanted some opinions on whether anyone has had this fault, or if it is common, since I haven't heard of it being a common one. Whether it sounds reasonable and what sort of cost people might expect.
The garage reckon they may have to source the part from Alfa, which they think might mean a cost of over £500, so I also wondered if anyone has any better ideas for sourcing the part, or if anyone is breaking a GTV and has one I could take off their hands?
It is a particularly high cost based on a hunch, which is all that bothers me.
Oh and finally anyone know of a good garage I can take it to in the Woking/Weybridge area, in case I decide to go for a second opinion. I know there is a dealership near Guildford, and that may be my only choice in the absence of anything more helpful.
