Idea How to: Condenser replacement

Maybe your condenser has a hole in it and is leaking copious amounts of refrigerant; or maybe you want a sparkly new condenser instead of your dull old one. Whatever the reason, the guide below will walk you through installing a new condenser. As we are working with a pressurised gas, I must ask you to ensure that the gas is drained from the system prior undertaking this procedure. And always wear protection!

Tools needed:
  • 10mm Hex key socket
  • 8 13mm socket set
  • Breaker bar
  • Cross screwdriver
  • Axle stands / bricks
  • 22mm combination spanner
  • Gloves and protective eye wear

  1. Raise up car on axle stands or equivalent (bricks in my case)
  2. Raise bonnet and remove near-side engine (passenger) cowling, using screwdriver and/or sockets
  3. Disconnect bumper electrical connector aside near-side headlight

  4. Undo bumper bolts (2) using breaker bar and hex socket
  5. Remove wheel arch guard screws at the bottom (2) and within wheel arch (2-4)
  6. Remove bumper through progressive pulling away from engine bay

  7. Remove condenser guard bolts (4) using small socket (helpful with extender)
  8. Undo hose unions using combination spanner
  9. Undo condenser fixing bolts (4) using small socket

  10. Remove old condenser by dropping it out from below
  11. Refit new condenser by reversing the order of the above
  12. Congratulate self at a job well done!

Full photo set available here; go forth, be strong...

FITTED: discs (F), Ferodo pads, thermostat, front wishbones, condenser, MAF, Brembo discs (R), Falken tyres

Excellent guide! Thanks for putting this together - I don't suppose you have one for replacing the rad as well?

Don't have a radiator guide yet, but should i replace mine, i'll put up one of my guides.

Whatever you do, i'd advise to not order a condenser replacement from AutoKool - i had a terrible experience from them and a weeks worth of headache; and to boot they were rude and unhelpful to me. Ended up spending 100 more than I intended to, due to them... I wouldn't wish them upon anybody.

air conditioning in ph 1 gtv??

hi guys, new to the forum and just recentlt bought a ph1 gtv, love it!!! I have never been car crazy til now and have so much to learn. so i may be starting with a really silly question.

i have a condesor unit on my alfa for air conditioning, however there is no belt attached and i cannot see how the thing works it is not connected etc does anyone have any pictures diagrams or any kind of help???

second thing is the fan settings are strange, from 1-3 barely a small puff of air and at 4 its like a gale force wind, is this an alfa quirk that i have to live with or is it a common fixable issue

any help would be really appreciated

Is the condenser essentially just the radiator ?
