I bought a silver P3 GTV in October from a roadie, I have a BFO grin everytime I drive it, but that's by the by.
I wanted to change the sound system (nothing major, but let's face it the factory supplied units are rubbish) and set myself a budget of £250 all in, and I'm a terrible one for planning things rather than going steaming in so it's been ongoing all 2013.
I bought front speaker adaptors and JBL CS-5 and CS-6 speakers last week to go with the JVC KD-SD80BT head unit I purchased earlier in the year for £135. Particularly happy with the deal for the speakers, £19.99 each set from Car Audio Security, what a steal! After that it was deciding whether to pay someone to install it all, but decided to have a crack at it myself.
I've studied several of the posts and threads on this site over the last 2 months but yours was especially useful; and to be honest changing the stereo and the front speakers was much easier than I expected.
I first removed the original HU and the surrounding around the gearstick to give better access to the wiring; I then removed the centre console storage box which meant that I could thread the USB cables for the Bluetooth and MP3/flashdrive (I'm using a Sony Walkman MP3) past the gearstick and the handbrake into the gap left by the box and the wires are completely out of sight! I used a coathanger with the end bent into a hook to pull the wires through, then cable tied them in the box interior to stop them retracting.
Fitting the stereo was a simple task as well, just unplug the old and plug in the new (the plugs cannot be mismatched), pushed the wiring to one side at the back to prevent any obstruction and slid the console in with matching fascia adaptor.
I honestly thought it would be really hard work involving stripping some of the car interior but believe me, changing the HU and front speakers is a piece of cake.
However, changing the rear speakers is going to be a little more challenging since there's hardly any room in the back to move, but that's a job for tomorrow...
Front speakers £20
Rear speakers £20
Speaker adaptor £10
HU fascia £10
Aerial adaptor £1
Satisfaction of having done the job myself priceless...
Love this site, who needs Haynes...
