Say you decide to go for new oil every 6,000 miles, you should do the filter every 12,000. It's called something fancy, but I can't remember what? Something about gravel beds?? Somebody wwho knows will be along soon.

I have always changed oil and filter every 5,000kms (which equates to about 7 months in the alfa for example)
my dad has always used this system on all his cars, which includes the (now mine) merc .. with about 150,000km on the clock
never had any trouble, it still runs like new
BTW: I have switched oils to Castrol GTX (3?) Magnatec ... i hope this is at least as good as the Agip SINT 2000 i used to use before? (both are 10W40)
I didnt go for synthetic because:
1) i will change at 5000km anyway, so why bother?
2) i heard it wouldnt be wise to first run an engine on non-synthetic/semi synthetic, then switch to fully synthetic
