Spiderman, funny you should ask. I have just return from picking-up my Spider from them today, 2 hours ago.
They originally replaced my cambelt, balance belt and tensioners late last year. The engine was a bit noiser after the change when hot, but following a telecon with them I was advised that the "whish" type noise could be associated with a new belt and usually the sound dies away as the belt beds-in.
Unfortunately someone then run into the backend of my Spider at the beginning of Feb., and it was effectively off the road for a few months getting the body fixed.
Back on the road again a few weeks back. The "whish" had developed into a type of rattle at hot idle. Took it back to David Thomas who then changed the alternator belt tensioner, however did'nt fix the noise. Took it back in again today and David changed the balance tensioner and balance belt. Considered it to be a faulty new balance belt tensioner. Just got home and it still sound okay, nice and smooth. *now keeping my fingers crossed.
However regarding your original question, I think the above was just a bad Alfa new part and the service I got from David Thomas Garages was good. No excuses, no BS, just a genuine approach and a wanting to fix the problem for me. (Did the belt/tensioner 2nd replacement under their warranty).
I would say, certainly try them. Suggest you get a clear quote for the work first, we had a little misunderstanding on the original job quote, but sorted to mutual satisfaction. Yes I would recommend them.
By the way also got my Windscreen Wiper Motor problem fixed earlier this month by Veloces (New Barnett). Usual intermittent wipe/stopping mid screen etc. problem. They changed the complete motor and linkages. As I originally bought the Spider from them (> 2.5 years ago) they changed the motor under an old warranty agreement I had via them. No hassle, no charge, no problems.
So I would recommend you look at either of these two independant Alfa specalists (David Thomas + Veloces)
