I was finally getting around to sorting myself out with a new panel due to the traditional seat belt buckle hole; I thought the panels were about 100 quid off Alfa, but turns out they are more like 300 quid
since the price rises.... This was totally out of the question so I thought sod it, might just try one of these Smart Repair "invisible mend" things, nothing to lose.
So a quick google search on interior trim repairs produces various sites, some with the usual unlikely looking before and after pictures. I picked one site i think was Smart Repair (i can check the site when i get back to work next week) and emailed them they emailed me a number of their local guy (who comes to your home or work in his van). I was VERY sceptical about all this, bear in mind and I am very fussy. So i took the panel off myself as he had advised this would be loads easier for him and with better results. I also found the 3 bits of plastic inside the door that had been punched out - the hole was over an inch across and vertical, and jagged, but the 3 bits fitted back in like a jigsaw.
The guy comes and sticks them back in with glue, then starts sanding. I watched for a minute and thought oh my God that looks awful, oh well will have to bite the bullet on a new pānel, hey ho. I then leave him to it for 15 minutes in my garage. He then knocks on my door I go out, and by Jesus, its a brand new panel!!!!!
I was chuffing stunned. He even got the grain back in the plastic (which is black, btw) and seriously, if you really stare in bright direct light you can maybe just about tell a tiny bit when pointed out, but really if you didnt know you really wouldnt know. Best of all, the bill was 30 quid only. This really was the best little job ive ever had done on a car, most impressive.
He says hes done a few GTVs in the same place (no shock there) and even if you dont have the broken bits he can fill in, though the results probably better if you have them. Also if your going to do it, take the panel off yourself so he can get to the back. For anyone in West Yorks (he may go further im not sure) call John Petein directly on 07850 128152
I'll get the website I got him off in a week or so if anyone wants it (i think there are guys nationally) but im on holiday for a week now will post again when i get back.
