sick spider - please help!

Any technical wizards out there, I need your expertise! My 1998 Spider 2.0 (75000 miles) engine has a problem keeping itself going; revs drop and it cuts out without constant pressure on the accelerator, even when warm. This has been happening since I topped up the oil, coincidence?
Please help - my local dealer was featured on Britain's Worst Rip Off (Croydon Fiat/Alfa) and I have very little cash!
(learning a new driving technique involving keeping one foot on the accerator whilst braking. probably not so clever long term...)

Bit of a strange one... did it happen as soon as you topped up the oil, or a while afterwards? Have you changed the oil type / viscocity? Was there anything which prompted you to check the oil? Any chance you overfilled it? Did you do anything else at the same time, like let the fuel run very low, or change fuel supply?

well i checked it after the oil light flashed on few seconds whilst tearing down the motorway (plus the engine was sounding more like an aircooled porsche, kinda "empty"). don't know if i used the same viscosity etc as i've only had the car a few months. i used 10/40 on advice from the local shop. as for overfilling, not sure, the dipstick is not very clear to read. it was still registering no oil (not even min mark) after adding nearly two litres. and the engine probs started immediately after the refill.
so my hunch, confirmed by your questions, is i've overfilled it with the wrong oil
will try an oil change.

The dipstick is a nightmare. After an oil change at service, I tend to top up a little oil every so often... even just a cup full, probably only evey 2 months. 1) to make sure it is kept topped up, and 2) to make sure I don't overfill!

so it's not just me with the dipstick then. nice one alfa - we have a little light telling us when the door is open but no indication of how much oil is in the thing!
