twin spark

Hello. Help I was looking at the H.T leads / spark coils and I was wondering y the twin spark system do not fire on the same pot? But instead it is spilt between 2 pots 1-4 and 2-3 has anyone ever looked into this? Or does any no y this is? I only ask as when u twin spark a motor bike u have 2 spark plugs firing on the same pot at the same time!

The current Alfa system fires the plugs sequentially to make sure all the mixture is burnt. It's as much for emissions as power.
On the 8 valve all alloy engines, both plugs fired at once. Big bang wink

so as i was thinking the twin spark system is not for power its for the ball sh*t emissions laws. as if each pot has fired properly there will not b any fuel left for the twin spark to fire laughing

yep it is only there for the emmisions.

in fact, the Fiat Bravo 1.6 engine is 103bhp (or 105?) and the 147 1.6 non-vvt engine is 105. (with twin spark).
i wonder why wink

The main technical reason is that unburnt petrol is extremely detrimental to the catalyst in the converter.

As you accelerate hard you invarably push unburnt fuel into the exhaust system (higher fuel consumption)this can clog the catalyst in a very short time and hence twin spark is not only for emmissions but also to save replacing catalyst converters.

In addition adding the catalyst to the exhaust reduces the engine power by about 10% and the motor manufacturers tried everything to bring the power back up, VVT, Twin Spark, direct injection, common rail injection etc.
