Hi all, been lurking here for a while and I must say it's great to see such a fab forum devoted to Alfa's.
I have an impending disaster to my wallet I fear as my newly aquired (Oct 2002) 99 GTV 2 Lusso 70,000 miles as developed an expensive sounding noise on startup which has been diagnosed as the "Variators" and the cam belt probably needs to be replaced. My local garage DBS Desira of Hertford will be quoting me on Monday after talking to the RAC about trying to get the work done on the RAC's 5Star Warranty I have. (Is this likly to be succesful?)
My question really is can anyone give an idea of how much this work should cost, and do you think it would be worthwhile to get a second opinion from the guys at Veloces of Barnet where we recently replaced my wifes 145 with a beautiful Cloverleaf version.

First of all welcome Earbones... secondly, talking of tensioners, has anyone heard of an apparent conversion from a black item to a white one (or vice versa not to sure)? I was talking to an Alfa mechanic (friend of mine) who recommended changing the cam belt WAY before the recommended 60ks, he recommended more around 35-40ks due to driving conditions in Malta, and told me to make sure i have the 'NEW' tensioner fitted once I change the belt.
Your mechanic is talking sense. The "new" one I think is black and supposed to be an upgraded variator. He's also correct about the belts, most people are saying get them done well before the recommended interval. There have been a lot of premature failures.
Well the deed has been done and my variator, camshaft belts tensioners etc have all been replaced along with a new windscreen wiper - the total cost was just over £460
Considering the parts alone came to £260.37 and VAT was nearly £70 I think the labour cost was pretty reasonable and I would certainly recommend David Thomas Garages - although I do now have a new 18" scratch on my rear off side which is a bit annoying to say the least.
