Wondering if some kind soul could shine a light on a problem I'm having with my GTV V6. I bought it 6 months back, and it's been running beautifully until the last few weeks. However, I noticed recently that at high revs (5.5k+) there seems to be a loss of power. It's hard to describe the problem for someone as non-technical as myself, but if you'll bear with me I'll try...
The engine takes on different characteristics - at 5.5k or above the smooth, breathy roar of the engine seems to "tighten up" - and the previously steep acceleration curve levels off immediately. It feels and sounds like the engine does when it's cold, though that isn't the case. Drop back the revs and it's back to its lovely raspy, responsive self.
Usually that's all it is, although on two occasions the symptoms were so severe that at around 6K revs the car "kicked back" with the loss of power, and for some time afterwards - whatever the gear or revs - the car was sluggish and un-responsive to throttle control. Not sure if it's relevant or not, but the first time this happened was when I was almost out of fuel, and the second time was when I had just filled up!
On both the severe occasions, I pulled up and let the motor idle for a few minutes. After that the car felt great,as if a blockage had been cleared. Which made a strange kind of sense, as the problem doesn't feel mechanical to a lay-man such as myself - it feels as if there's a blockage or something holding back. That's just my emotive interpretation though, so may be completely wrong!
It's not a consistent problem. Sometimes it's worse than others, and sometimes it's not there at all. I took it out this morning and it was fine, all the way up the counter. However, driving it back this evening the problem was evident again, with a reluctance to pull beyond 5500 revs.
Another factor that may, or may not, be relevant is that there's a lot of speed bumps where I live. When I first had the car I didn't realise how low it was and had a couple of bangs on the underneath, before I wised up to it and learnt how to gently manoeuvre the car over them (by braking just on the peak!). Could I have crimped a pipe underneath perhaps?
I'm taking it into the local dealer as soon as they can fit me in (looks like a couple of weeks away!!) but was wondering if the gurus here could give me any hints in the meantime...
