Oil In Gear Stick chamber

I have been noticing for a while now that the gear stick will not spring back in ti its central position in its own.

This weekend I took the car out and it is worse, the gear stick will slide forward and back in and out of gear realy smooth. But when I try to move accross throughthe neutral area it is a little more resistane, it does go but it has to be smack on the area to move.

I took the collar of the gear stick and found a load of oil in the chamber.

Can any one help me. It is a GTV CUP 51 plate

Many thanks

P2 GTV 3.0

I've had this diagnosed as lack of lubrication in the unit on top of the gearbox that the cables from the gear lever are attached to. My Alfa specialist said they had not had any success with trying to lubricate these in situ so either a case of removing and dismantling or just replace with a new unit(about £80). However, others on here say squirting liquid grease under the rubber cover does work. Haven't got round to it myself yet. Do a search for previous threads.
