Acceptable Radiator, Window and Suspension Prices?

Hi there,

Turin Motors have spotted that my 2002 2.0 litre T-Spark Spider needs a few things doing.

Firstly, it needs a new motor/unit fitting for the passenger side window (it gets stuck down), which they quoted at about 380 inc.

It also needs a new radiator, and that was quoted at about 480 inc. Apparently my spider has a "non-standard" radiator that's very difficult to get hold of.

Finally, it also needs new rear suspension (at some point, not urgent), that will cost about 850 inc.

Another garage quoted about 1/3rd of this price, but I know Turin are very good with ******, and generally have given good service. Their prices do feel a touch high though, anyone know what I should expect to pay?

Feels high to me, but the devil's in the detail.

For the window motor, if it were me I'd first try getting a 2nd hand motor from a breaker and fitting it myself. Might be a long job, but shouldn't require any special technical expertise or specialist tools. If it works, I've saved myself 300 or so!

The second sounds like bullsh*t to me. To test, I'd give the folks at my chassis number and ask them to quote on the appropriate radiator (and to comment on its non-standardness).

For the third, it all depends on exactly what rear suspension work is needed. The most common thing is the bushes, and even replacing them with Powerflex bushes (a very worthwhile upgrade that's not much more than the standard fix) will cost you about 400 for supply and fit by a specialist.

All seems very high to me. Can't be exact on two of the issues but a second hand window reg can be had for 50 - 80 delivered and I believe, but not sure as it's a while since I checked, a new one is about the 130 mark. It's a bit of a pain to fit but for someone who knows the job shouldn't take more than about two hours.

Rad - No idea.

Powerflexing, if that's what they are quoting, is high. For OEM still a touch high but not as bad. Before embarking on any work on the suspension do a search on here to gather opinions about Powerflex v OEM. I reckon that most people would recommend Powerflxing but there is a minority, which includes myself, that remain unconvinced. Certainly come the evil day when mine has to be done I'll be going the OEM route....

Have you seen the Lincolnshire Lounge ? Don't stay off the radar, come on in and have a look !

it strikes me that they are trying to price themselves out of a job, that may sound silly but i have seen garages do this....

The rad isn't a difficult job to do, it is a little more awkward if it has Aircon, but certainly not the sort of money they are quoting

Powerflexing - I have had two 916's now that have been powerflexed, in fact i have never driven one that hasn't been 'flexed i can say this though, the handling is great, its one of the best things about this car and having it done means i dont have to endure having to rebush the suspension every few years, again i wouldn't be looking at ore than 500 to do this, if fact i have seen traders quote less than that on AO

Rad Prices

I got a new rad from Alphaholics recently, for my 3.0 litre but I think the rads are the same, for 145 quid plus VAT. They are veryy helpful and friendly there, explaining about the plug that I needed and was included to plug the hole where some cars have a sensor. I then fitted it with my Dad in long morning, it's bit fiddley but just nuts and bolts stuff and remembering where they went.

Guys, thanks for all the replies. The links from @gooman, @tandino and @watshot are appreciated.

Yeah, Turin have always been great, but these days they seem to be charging silly money. They even charged me 50 for diagnosing the problem, which only cropped up 30 miles after I paid them good money to do the 68K service (on their recommendation).

A local garage gave a preliminary quote of 150 for the window, and 200 for the radiator, which is closer tothe prices shown here. Hopefully they'll do a good job with it..
