We have a 2.0ts Spider Lusso bought new in March 2001.Its probably true to say that the newer cars, certainly post 98 phase 2 cars are more sorted than the earlier ones.
However I would still advise anyone, buying any new Alfa model whatever the model to go into ownership with their eyes wide open and knowing what to expect.
If you want hassle free top down motoring you will probably be better served by a Toyota MR2 or Mazda MX5.
Our Spider has covered 9k miles. We had a few issues early on regarding rattles, the hood required adjustment, the boot lock was replaced and a coolant hose came adrift. These were all put right under warranty.
It is the sort of car though ,which requires you to keep a on top of things with constant care and maintenance.
Personally I find the scuttle shake problem is a little overstated. In my experience I have ridden or driven other convertibles which are no better. If you want refinement ,most wouldn`t consider an open car in the first place, unless you could afford a Mercedes SL.
However I think the few glitches we have suffered are more than compensated by the sheer pleasure the Spider gives us every time we drive it or just look back and admire it.
If you want any more advice, feel free to ask.
