camshaft variator

I need to get this fixed on my GTV 2.0 TS....sounds too much like a diesel on startup. Anyone know if this is expensive or difficult. Is there anything else I should do at the same time. The cars done a little over 30k now.

yes there is something you should do but I cant think for the life of me what it is! This very topice was discussed in the 145 section. Some other people complained of the same problem and one guy in particular talked of the fix for this plus something else being done at the same time. Maybe it was the belts??

I tried to search back for you to find the thread but theres something wrong with the search facility on here.

Hello there !

Sounds like the variator to me ... I'd get it looked at .. changed .. but I would stay away from the main dealers .. go for a specalist

Have fun !

If you are going to have the cam variator changed, at the same time I would also have the timing and balance shaft/trans belt changed and the timing belt tensioner as these items have to be removed to have the variator changed.

I would also steer clear of the main dealers, I've seen how some of them work.

Good luck anyway

Hey Caine,

I had the Variator changed on my car this time last year and the costs worked out like this (didn't include belts as they were changed 3 weeks earlier by a **** garage who reckoned it was the water pump making the noise).

Variator 64.81
Gasket 6.40
Gasket 4.96
Labour 75.00

total plus VAT 177.63

Gotta get it changed because the diesel soundtrack does suit the car.

Best of luck.
