Hi guys, am new to the forum as I am looking to buy a GTV lusso, about 11 grand, but must be low milage as looking to keep the car for a while. Need any advice on problems to look for when viewing and any servicing problems/stories, as I have never owned an alfa and hear a few scary stories. Please keep it simple as I am a bird! All I can say is do as much research as possible and get your car from an Alfa specialist with as much service history as possible.
I`m sure that some GTV owners here can point you in the direction of somewhere in the West Midlands.
If you like send us a private message with your e-mailand I can send you a magazine article on buying a GTV.
If you find a good one you needn`t be too worried about Alfa reliability, although I would say to expect a few creaks and rattles! But what else can you buy that looks that good for 11k?
Insist on a mint service history and you wont go far wrong. Cant point you in any direction for dealers in midlands. Avoid private purchase, BUY FROM A DEALER and go for low mileage. Be prepared to travel to get a good one, you wont regret it. Be prepared for steady depreciation. You might just scrape a series 2 gtv with revised interior and exterior for 11k. Obviously the younger it is the better for re-sale. Good luck and dont buy the first one you see!
My site is going up in two weeks, theres a buying guide on there. Might be of help.
Hello there !! Biggest thing to watch for is the ware on the rear arm bushes. If they go then they start to knock on the rear sub-frame .. if this goes then it can be REALLY expensive. I caught mine just in time and had to have all 4 of the rear arms changed .. still better than the sub-frame needing to be changed !! Those bushes usually go around the 60K mark - oh and the timing belt needs to be changed at 70K .. so watch out for that one.
Well thats enough of the 'bad' stuff .. as far as the rest of the GTV goes .. You are going to LOVE it .. have you ever driven one ?? Would not swap mine for anything .. well maybe a 3.0 V6 one !!
And if you are in Wolverhampton you have the best garage in the Midlands not far from you, in Bilston. Unfortunatly they dont sell any cars, only service + fix them. What I will say is dont go anywhere near Ryauto for your Alfa .. they are a bunch of cowboys .. infact they give cowboys a bad name !
So if you see a green GTV blasting round the midlands then give him a wave as its probably me !!
I'd agree with what everyone's said before. I bought my GTV two years ago (its a 96 model) and I've done 30k miles in it. I bought it from Motorvogue in Northampton who always seem to have a fairly constant supply of used GTVs and Spiders.
So long as you get it serviced regularly and keep a check on the oil it should be good. Essential that you get one with history though. I changed the cambelt at 70k which is a bit pricy.
I love the car - its fantastic and I wouldn't change it for anything. Go get one!
