Test drove a 3.0 v6 spider on saturday for a laugh, was in the ****ty dealer in the week getting a wire repaired so airbag light would go off - asked if they had a 3.0 spider to have a go in while waiting for them to rip me off with an hours labour!
Apparently there aren't many about and they had one coming on saturday so saturday morning, sun shining off to the dealer, he gives me the keys and off I go on my own. What a beautiful engine, the whole car is dominated by the engine, loads of power, gets through the first 3 of its 6 gears so quick, easy to keep hitting the limiter in 2nd.
However, the engine is too much for the chasis by miles, I had no confidence pushing on in tight corners, nose feels so heavy and just understeers severely, handling feels really unbalanced, compared to the twin spark. There just seems too much power for the front wheels of the spider to cope with. Got back to the dealer after a nice hours drive, when the petrol light came on! it seems to drink loads of fuel! The dealer agrees that it is too much for the chasis, no hard sell or anything, I think they knew that this free hours caning their v6 was sortof compensation for the appalling service I have recieved from them!
Anyway if the v6 had been out for years, I would have been tempted to pay a bit more than when buying mine 2nd hand, that engine alone is worth it, but £26k for a new one! I'd have a TVR or used porsche! Just thought I'd share this with you lot - conclusion v6 - great engine,****e handling. twin spark - a bit underpowered but nicely balanced. BTW what do you lot think of the black turbod spider for sale on autodeltas site? looks good to me. http://www.autodelta.co.uk/contents.html
