About checking for boost, when you take it for a drive, accelerate with 4/5th's pedal pressed, and then at about 3000 - 4000 revs press FULLY to the floor - you should get a significant kick in the back.....
Listen for the tappets, if they are tapping then they need adjusting, which may not be a bad thing as they are supposed to be adjusted every 20,000 km.
When you take it for a drive, warm it up and then take it close to the red line in most gears (certainly 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th). Tell the owner you want to do this to check for hesitant acceleration. If it does hesitate at all, then that means you will have to completely change the HT Leads, rotor, distribution cap, spark plugs, which adds up to quite a bit of cash.
