No, because I cut around this part when removing the gearknob. Although it was left on the stick, I reckon it's part of the inside of the original gearknob.

Just managed to shorten the shaft on my V6, and with a bit of creative thinking the 'Lift to Select Reverse' mechanism has been shortened by the same amount too.

Double win for me..... the gear throw is much nicer and the pop out screen doesnt hit the top of the gear stick when in 1st gear.... (I replaced the OEM knob years ago with a suitable silver one from fleabay that was specifically for cars with the Lift for Reverse thing...

Will get some pics up later if anyone's interested...

As i am now having the same problem with you, can i ask you how this plastic "mace like" bit actually comes off? Is it screwed or do i just need to pull it out? It really seems to be fixed very tightly..

reading your posts I assume you are all talking about the 5 gears version.

I have a 6 gears with some mechanical switch to be able to put the "R" in. Beating the knob off will crash it.

Anyone tried to replace a knob like mine?

Pretty sure you can do away with the lift up reverse mech altogether if you so wish...I have read many threads on this I think - but I'll leave the experts to clarify.

Looks like an earlier poster in this thread (seanhump) has removed his knob and still kept the little reverse lift up mech though - so both maybe an option - again, you need an expert

Thumbs Up Alfa gtv v6 gear knob replacement

I found these old threads pretty useful and decided it was time to change the old gear knob as it was letting down the look of the cabin. I found what I think is a fantastic solid alluminum and leather knob from sqaudra sportife (i think thats how you spell it ).

Anyhow, the original knob was NoT going to budge, so cut it off i did, one stanley knife and a junior hacksaw proved that this is on a spline and no way in hell is it ever going to "twist and pull off" - don't waste your time and effort trying that one!!!!

The new one was fitted in minutes, looks excellent (in my opininion) and is a bit expensive at around 90 euro but you do get what you pay for. It only took two days to arrive from Germany as well.

Don't put up with a dodgey knob, cut the blighter off and fit a nice new billet ally one.
