Crazed 1996 spider cambelt

hi i am going to get my cambelts, shatfts etc done and a private mechanic has offered to do the job for free if i buy the parts looking on ebay and cambelt kits range from £60 up to £200. i saw a price on alfaworkshop for all in for £300. anyone got any plus or minus points to doing these.would be nice to have the paperwork from alfa garage but saving at least £100 is nice too. just bought the car and having a blast

Re: 1996 spider cambelt

If it's done for free, then you've got no contract and hence no comeback if it's not done right.

If the job is fluffed, then (at best) your timing will be out and you'll have to pay to get it done right, or (at worst) the belt may go sooner.

In any case, it will affect the resale value ... any buyer with half a brain will see that it wasn't done by an Alfa specialist.

It seems like a false economy to me!

Re: 1996 spider cambelt

You need special camlocking tools to do the job properly. It is not a question of lining up tippex 'timing marks'. You really need to get the variator done as well at the same time as these do wear and affect performance.

It's a specialist job. Don't cut corners for just £100. The TS 16v engine is a fairly sophisticated engine and deserves respect. Cut corners and you may be lucky once, but you won't be lucky twice, and you will bitterly regret it.

Re: 1996 spider cambelt

unless the private mechanic was an alfa specialist then i would say thanks but no thanks....

As has been said, the TS engine isn't really a run of the mill and will require special tools to lock the cams etc.

£300 is still cheap in all honesty, the last time i had mine done i paid close to £500 however that included the balance belts and the variator
