Re: why buy/own a spider why not an mgf or mx5?
I'm not sure if the three cars are comparable really. Or rather the MGF and MX5 are comparable together and the 916 Spider is in an entirely different league.
Taking them individually the MGF was a surprisingly good effort by the disastrous, nay toxic Rover Group to produce a 'typical' British sports car. It is what it is: a nebulous but intriguing pile of crud spawned from the death throws of the tarted up Leyland nuclear disaster zone, a final spasm of hope from a thoroughly diseased and decomposing corpse.
The MX5, for all its inherent virtues, is Japanese, and that, surely, is more than enough to realise it has all the class and pedigree of an abdominal tapeworm.
The 916 Spider has class, history, and breeding. That doesn't mean it has no faults, there are several to speak of. But all is forgiven when you look and admire, when you turn the key, when you drive anywhere and you are aware of the beauty, the history, the class.
These attributes are transcendental, and therefore incomparable.
