I remember feeling the same way about that bootline before I bought in but it's a fabulous grower. Within 2 days I converted - what a sexy backside it is!
I had a very lowered and sorted pininfarina 306 cabriolet before my spider. I loved the styling, especially the big butt.
The V6 916 spider was an obvious progression as;
a) I'd already put up with the poor reliability of French and Italian cars.
b) i was in love with cars with big butts
c) i wanted something I didn't need to bounce up and down the gears (hence the V6).
The realier comments are correct. I don't view the spider as a sports car, it's more of a sports tourer or GT car (esp. the V6). Fast enough to get you in trouble yet cute enough to get you out.
I wasn't sold on the exterior styling when I bought the car, particularly the front head lights and the standard 16's. A week or so later I was walking towards the car and had one of those defining moments when I thought to myself "That is f**kin beautiful". I of course came over all guilty and Scottish and thought "I don't deserve a car like this" within 5 paces!
Preferences are exactly that preferences, but here's my two pence worth.
Fr my money the first MX5 was cute enough but I had the money to insure a car far more powerful so why wouldn't I. The new MX5 is like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle with wheels, what where they thinking?!?
The MGF was not a particlarly attractive car to start with but has aged dreadfully. With all the inherent problems with head gaskets I didn't even bother.
If I was wanting a pure drivers experience it would have been an elise but I wanted some level of comfort (or just trim would have done).
If I wanted it purely for looks I would have stuck to my thoughts of late 60's Merc Pillarless coupe's but I don't have my own lock-up to keep it going
If I just wanted to go fast I would have bought another GXSR but I didn't want to die or burn my license.
If I didn't waste all my money on wine, women and song I would have bought a Maserati Spider but I do spend all my money on wine women and song.
So there you go ......best get some work done now!
