Alfa GTV V6

gearbox question

Got a bit of an annoying problem in the GTV, the sync ring for third gear seems to be warn down (crunches unless gearing veeeery carefully into third)..

...this is a rather common problem on the alfa 75, had a crunch on mine but this was fixed rather well just by changing the gearbox oil.

is it hard to change the gearbox oil in the GTV (916) and do you guys think this will help the problem? worst case scenario how expensive would it be to get this fixed at a AR garage, would it be cheaper to buy a secon hand gearbox and have that fitted?

Re: gearbox question

It is well worth doing, it won't make your box perfect but I found it made mine much happier, though its still a bit graunchie when cold.

Probably the hardest part of the job is getting that bloody undertray off and on again. Have a look at the Alfa Workshop site in the How to section under "How to remedy a non selecting fourth gear" not what you are doing but some pictures to help with the geography.

The tricky bit is removing the drain plug which is a big hex. Unfortunatly its right by the wishbone mount so hard to get straight on it and it needs some welly to undo. I had to jack up the box a tad to make some room.
