Having owned a gtv6 for many years and then a 2.0ts 156 I certainly don't subscribe to the theories that rwd Alfas were "the last real Alfa" the gtv6 was and is my favourite car, it just did everything right, but that said the front drive 156 "handled" far better for us mere mortals, such light and delicate handling coupled with super quick and communicative steering, and then that engine, wow its gotta be the best 4 cylinder unit out there, it has a really hard metallic howl when thrashsed all the way to its red line of 7250rpm, and lets not forget its size, not modern safety gizmo laden over sized bloated boring junk, but perfectly judged dimensions.
My wife also has a MX5, which is a lovely car, great fun and a cheeky character, that much is true, but what a dog rough engine. Handling wise you can't fault 'em, but what will the new one with an Alfa engine be like in 2015? Could that be the ultimate?
As for a sud? Well my dad had a 1.5ti briefly and I don't remember it being that good (but I never drove it) an SZ would figure quite highly but on everyday roads I'm not too sure about the ride quality. These are just my personal opinions (other opinions are available)
