Help Broken Odometer

Hi guys, I was after a bit of help - the odometer (LCD display on the dashboard) on my 1998 ph2 GTV seems to have broken some of its crystals.

To fix it, do I need to replace the whole circuit board behind the dah or just replace the LCD part?

Second part of the question: where does the car store the mileage info - I'm a little concerned that if I replace the odometer with a new one, the car might suddenly think that it has 0 miles on the clock!

Thanks for any help with this!
