this sounds like the cambelt/tensioner has let go and damaged the valves, the enging then turns over quickly as there is no compression to provide resistance...
the fact that you left it in gear and the car lurched forward would imply that the starter is working fine, in effect the starter was turning the gearbox that was in gear, thus transmitting the power to the wheels.
The cambelt may look in good order but if a tensioner has let go you will find that it is slack somewhere, to get a full picture you will need to get the cambelt cover off.
I have a feeling you will have to try and find a good indy in Joberg, especially if a stealer is going to charge that much to rebuild your current engine
