Towing eye

Silly question really, BUT when I bought car at the weekend, went to drag it home on a rigid tow. The eyebolt, nicely clipped into the plaggy bit in the spare wheel, wouldn't fit the hole! Too big. Anyone know what size & thread it should be? The eyebolt I have looks M14 fine. The hole is maybe M12, but since the car is 55 miles away, I can't just try some bolts to see if it is fine or coarse. Definitely right hand thread (my Vectra has some strange l/h thread on it and my 145CL has fixed eyes).
It would be easier to drag it rather than borrow Merc Sprinter from work, pick up mate's trailer from nearly 20 miles away, etc..............
