yo alfa dudes!! just had my cambelt, water pump, aux belt and all tensioners changed and i still have a faint whirring noise!! i had it alot louder before the belts where done and we found that the culprit was the tensioner linked to the aircon unit...(is that right)...but after having them changed the noise is still there but not as loud! it rises with the revs and cannot be heard when in gear but quite faint when idling and when reved.....any ideas??!
hey justin, defiantly the same noise, its exactly the same!!when it whent into have the belts done, the mechanic showed me the aux belt off and it did away with the noise...but its back! but its defiantly not as loud though and he showed me the old tensioners, they where buggered!!!
ooo i dont know limey, the mechanic just got normal ones, but i dont know what this is...what are the most common?i say "normal" ones as they dont really have gtv's over here so i guess when he rang for the parts he just got what he thought was right.the noise was there before and the guy showed me the old tensioners that where metal, but would they really make a noise?iv never heard it on any other cars...
It could be the aux belt.
The multi groove pulleys that it runs on really need cleaning when the belt is changed. They pickup bits of rubber & rust etc.
Also, the new belt needs to be top quality, as does the cam & balance belts. If not genuine alfa belts then I would only ever fit 'Gates Powergrip' belts.
It could of cousre be something else & you will always get a degee of noise, there is a lot going on down there.
take off the auluxilary belt see if it still happens,i did this on my spider and the noise stopped so i disconnected the aircon and ran a belt just to the power steering pump and alt and it still did it. so i replaced the power steering pump and it still does it so ive decided to replace the alternator when i have 2 million hours to spare in the mean time i turn the stereo up.
