Key problems help and advice

My car went into the garage for a minor body repair. All fine with the job eventually but because of holidays and when the car came back there was some adjustment needed to the door glass and a piece of rubber trim they had it nearly 5 weeks.
In this time it has developed a problem where the key code light won't go out and it won't start.
The steering wheel position had been moved and they said the battery is weak. I have left the car for 4 weeks with the immobiliser on and it starts first time?
I have NEVER experienced this before it went into the garage.
The repairs were carried out under a 3rd parties insurance but the problem is difficult to pin down to a scrape down the side of the car.
I am worried that I pull in for petrol and can't get it going again.
What do you think?

Could simply be a weak battery

Wouldn't have thought that it has anything to do with the accident damage, the clue seems to be in the " steering wheel was moved " comment.

There has been instances where a poor connection to the aerial which is inside the cowling has caused problems, might be worth having a look at this.

If it's not the battery, Check the earth strap to the gearbox, that can "corrode" and cause symptoms simular to an immobiliser fault or as Nige say's could be the immobiliser antenna, this is a plastic ring which sit's around the ignition barrel with a wire coming out of it, you will need to remove the top and bottom steering column shroud to access this.
Look to see if the wire is trapped or damaged.

Re: Key problems help and advice

With mine it was simply a matter of the steering wheel rake having been adjusted causing the "aerial" for the key to fail to pick up the code properly. Easy sort at the time was to release the steering wheel height adjuster and turn the key while the wheel was in the lowest position. Worked every time I had an issue (I had the AA out the first time it happened - most embarrassing)
