Humming at 50mph

My car has developed a sort of humming noise at around 50MPH. If i speed up it seem's to go. Does any one think it could be a wheel bearing? If so how do I identify which wheel and is it easy to change?

Sounds like it could be a bearing?: Or tyres maybe?

Have a check on the rear tyres mate. They wear unevenly on the inside. It could be the 50p syndrome that effects most GTV's.

If it was the wheel bearing they are easy to change. I am betting its the tyres on the back though.

Good luck.

if it wheel bearing it usually stops when you go around a corner thus indicating which wheel it is...

Re: Humming at 50mph

i had the same thing and it was a wheel bearing, but just had to wait for it to get louder to find out which side it was, was easy to change one big hub. paid about 90 for it, not from alfa just shop around.

Re: Humming at 50mph

i found that budget tyres have a tendancy to make a lot of noise, wheel bearning noise normally gains with speed....

My Spiders N/S wheel bearing was horrendous, hour later and 50 it was all sorted.

If you are doing the corner test remember if you pitch it into a right handed corner the left hand bearing is the one under pressure and vice-versa

Wheel bearings can be difficult to diag as untill they get bad its anyones guess, sometimes a temperature gauge on each wheel after a long run could help

Re: Humming at 50mph

I thought I had a bearings problem on the rear nearside of my Spider, but then noticed that the tyre - Goodyear Eagle F1 - had huge bumps on the inside edge making the surface completely uneven. The offside looks like it's going the same way.
Do you think this is caused by worn bearings?
