Spider door mirrors - flaky paint

Hi All
My 96 2.0TS Spider is losing the paint finish on the mirror housings - it's just flaking off - worse on the drivers side. This is exposing what looks like GRP mat below. Anybody any thoughts on refinishing this? Can I just mask and overspray an acrylic paint, or does it need to be keyed/primed first?
Appreciate any advice you can give.

Can't help you on any advice, but were the mirrors painted as original? Just looked at mine and they are basic black plastic

Re: Spider door mirrors - flaky paint

I did mine not too long ago, probably in August/September and it made a huge difference.
Mine were pretty bad, so decided to take them off, sand them down (wet n dry) and then prime/respray in black gloss (spray paint can). Took a few coats, spraying lightly to get an even coat (so that it doesn't drip/run).

They're quite easy to take off, the workshop manual (pdf) that has been kicking about on here shows you exactly how to remove them. They come off in three bits, 2 metal and obviously the plastic mirror bit.
I Seem to remember loosening the door card a bit to get the allen key in for the final screw (little bit fiddley)

Used the remainder of my black gloss to touch up the wiper arms, as they were a bit tatty.

You'll have to post some pics, when you've got it done.

Re: Spider door mirrors - flaky paint

Spiders did not have painted mirrors, they were the mat black bumper colour so its probably flaking off due to it not being done that well in the first place.

Personally I think the mirrors look better mat black as it is the same colour as the rest of that part of the car.
