Re: 1998 GTV: Bypassing a Spark Plug...? Huh...?
Sent him this:
I've had a quick look into the cambelt changes for the Twinspark engines and apparently they require a change every 36,000 miles or 3 years. Seeing as yours was last done in 2005 this means it's over due and will need doing ASAP.
Also, according to some tech heads on the Alfa Owner forum the issue with the spark plugs seems like a bit of a serious one, and that 'bypassing' the plug can lead to more problems down the line?
The cambelt change is going to cost me just over £400 from Alfanet, which is actually a very good price, then I'm likely to be looking at a further £100 or so to sort out the spark plug problem, then of course there's the issue with the Odometer.
I can see the car costing me a further £600 or so the second I buy it, meaning that in reality it's possibly not worth buying in the first place, as decent examples with cambelt changes go for no more than £1300 or so.
Realistically Rob, what's the best price you'll be able to take for the car? I mean, with any luck you'll probably be able to sell your car to someone less Alfa savvy than me for your asking price, but if you are after a quick sale for this weekend coming I would have to lower my offer. Of course, if that doesn't interest you in the slightest that's fine mate, as I said, someone will more than likely buy it even with it's issues as it's a cracking looking car.
Let me know what you think,
