Not so simple... pretty sure it varies by year!
If yours is post '99 then I think it is always a normal thread, i.e. counter-clockwise to undo. It certainly was with my 2002 which I did a few weeks ago.
Pre '99 were reverse thread I think. If you get hold of the PDF manual, for which the download links are somewhere on this forum, it shows which way to undo the major nuts with little arrows indicating which way. There are different sections for pre and post '99 which show them being different.
Take a look in my thread, DIY Cambelt Change on V6, and you will see a link to eBay for a fairly cheap 12v impact driver. This worked a treat for me. I had also tried an air impact wrench, which didn't touch it, and tried briefly by hand to realise it was very tight. The 12v job knocked it off in seconds!
