If you have a CF 1 engine, metal top, I believe that the indicated Temp will be about 10 degrees lower than the actual coolant temperature. SymonH2000 discovered this. Apparently it's due to the sensor location, iirc it isn't directly in contact with the coolant.
If this is true, and I personally believe it, then you are not too far off the mark. If you have access to a DMM with temp sensor adaptor this will remove all doubt. I suppose that even poking a normal thermometer into the header tank would also work but I haven't tried this.
