how much smoke is ok?
I have read some threads on here that said in general GTVs and Spiders have quite smokey engines, but I still get quite paranoid about the amount of smoke, or should I say exhaust fumes, my car puts out.
I can be sitting at the lights and obsesively watching it in my left wing mirror. Sometimes there is none, sometimes big puffs of smoke. I look around and hardly any other cars seem to be putting out smoke. The fumes look normal - not like I am burning oil.
OK, it is a biggish engine and it is Winter so condensation is going to be more noticeable but I do worry. It is mostly when I am stationary and idling, and not much or none once I get going.
The first time I checked the engine coolant, about 4 weeks after I got the car, it was quite low so I topped it up immediately. Since then I have been keeping a close eye on it and it does drop a little bit when I fill it up to max, but not dramatically.
I also made the dumbass mistake of forgetting to put the expansion tank cap back on for a whole week. Lucky I am checking it every week. Car never overheated so I am hoping it is ok, but I obviously had to fill it up quite a lot after that.
So - Spiders - usually smokey or should I worry?
*realise it is quite difficult to quantify "smokiness"!
