MOT tomorrow, but with white smoke.
The dreaded MOT tomorrow, I dont know if I am paranoid due to my previous GTV which failed on emissions, however this one has a little too much white smoke, not constantly but when accelerating; however sometimes it happens the second time its strted in a morning after a short journey while ticking over. I have followed other (non-alfas) cars recently and some produce no white smoke/steam and others are bellowing it out.
I have spent the last week searching this forum, some say its normal when cold in winter and others say its first sign of head gasket.
I bought this car about 5,000 - 7,000 miles ago after it had gone through an engine rebuild, and so far has been tip top, loses a bit of water down by the belts but from reading another thread I believe this to be first stages of water pump failure.
So my question, am i paranoid or is it going to need a new gasket, belt, re-lapping of the head, valve compression check, etc. what should i look out for, my thermostat i wouldnt say is right as while driving it over the winter period it sits on the gauge between 50 and 90 degrees.
will the white smoke effect my mot, in my eyes it should make it better as its washing the emissions, but i have no idea thats a guess. If its to effect the MOT i will cancel and begin steps to sort out the gasket although obviously it will be a pain getting it anywhere.
what do you guys, the experts, think?
Quick follow up: just been outside checking lights, etc with the engine running for about 20 mins and no white smoke!
is it right its best to have the car stinking hot for its mot?
