When I tried my broken key with transponder chip in hand first time I held transponder too far from the ignition column. I had to hold it at least 1cm or less from the column/ignition lock (it uses the metal housing to transmit the signal afaik) for it to be able to get the signal back from the chip. So if you taped it onto the key there is a possibility it was just out of range. Even if that was say only by 1cm or less, it would be enough to degrade signal strength for it to not start. I guess when they design these system they probably limit the transponder range for security reasons.
You can test this by holding the one of the little chips in your hand and moving toward column until it will let you start.
