Last chance saloon.... engine tapping!
Not sure if many of you are well-versed in GTV V6 TB (the 2 litre version), but I really want to clear up the 'tapping' from my GTV engine.
I believe that when the camshaft was replaced (just before I bought the car 5 months ago), the tappets/valves weren't adjusted at the same time, hence the tapping....... a new camshaft presumably has increased dimensions in its unworn state (the auto bazaar who sold me the car did say that the tapping should gradually disappear as the camshaft wore in, and that the tapping was not going to damage the engine, something that has been confirmed by other garages......). TBH, you can't hear the tapping when in the car, but it is quite noticeable when standing outside the car.
I have been to a small number of Fiat/Alfa independents (for other unrelated repairs....), who seemed not to know a great deal about the subject (one even thought that the GTV V6 TB 2 litre had hydraulic tappets - they don't, they have shimmed tappets) and expounded on the probable high cost of repair for this issue.
However, having just looked in the GTV service manual, I see for my GTV that valve clearance checks should be carried out every 20,000 kms. Surely this wouldn't be a recurring step in the maintenance process if it was hugely expensive to do? I know it's a V6 with two heads to unbolt, but (here's where I show my lack of mechanical knowledge) I dimly recall hearing that the valves and the tappets one and the same part....... so valve clearance is effectively tappet clearance.... or do I have it wrong?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
