Just checking the oil level before visiting a friend a couple of hours away and I notices so creamy build up in the top of the oil filler cap. I have heard somewhere that this could indicate head gasket problems.
I then checked the water level and there was hardly anything in the expansion tank, by this time alarm bells are ringing in my head.
I spoke to someone that might know about headgaskets a bit better than i and they said they have had it before where condensation in cold weather can form in the cap and make it look like water is in the system.
I filled up the expansion tank before my journey and cleaned off the cap, I have now checked in after 200 miles and there is nothing on the inside of the cap, but the water has gone down a little bit, could just be topping up the system and will now be ok.
What tests can I do to see if the head gasket is on the way out? compression test i guess..
Also what water temp do others run? My car is fine on normal running, but in traffic jams it rises and can be above 90 until the fan brings the temp down, is this normal?
Cheers for any help.
