I'm not absolutely certain, but I think the aircon compressor should disengage when not in use. e.g. the pulley should turn with little or no resistance when the compressors electromagnetic joint is disengaged.
Although I suppose the bearing could still squeal.
Does engaging/disengaging the aircon make any difference to the noise ?
Can't help with the bypass, thought about doing it myself to improve MPG - since the aircon is next to useless even when working well. But my MPG is pretty good anyway (at least, it is when the Mrs is drving) so never got around to it.
