Driving through town a few months ago, heard a strange noise, then the car filled with mist and my feet got covered in oil. At the same time, the steering went stiff.
Limped home and found the rack was leaking from the pinion where the rack connects to the steering wheel.
Off to the nearest AR dealer. Sure enough the rack was gone. As it is a RHD car, I sourced a recon rack from the UK. (AR price horrendous!!)
Rack changed all happy again.
3 weeks ago, same again!
Back to AR. Rack gone again! Original rack sent to recon specialist in Germany. Refitted to car, leaked again. AR dealer suspected bad overhaul. Removed rack sent for overhaul.
I asked if it was possible the pump was giving too much pressure or return line blocked. Told that it was unheard of.
Rack fitted, engine started, leaked immediately!
Rack overhauled again, I went to fetch it myself and watched the pressure testing so I know it is OK.
AR have recommended pump change as it might be causing overpressure (I already told the workshop that!)
So come monday, rack will be changed again, pump will be changed and the steering hoses checked for blockage.
All this would be so much easier if Alfa had not started with the steering rack then built the car round it!
Waiting nervously for monday.
