After a day or two of a noise coming from the engine bay, which I thought was the variator after looking on here for similar (sounded like a grinding in time with the rotation of the engine), the engine appears to have died. My girlfriend was driving the car at the time, to which she said the noise got louder for a few moments, then cut out, with all the dash warning lights coming on.
She was able to get the car towed home - the bloke who towed the car said he originally thought the cambelt may have snapped, but then thought it may have dropped a valve. He has advised us not to turn the engine over at all, and get it checked out. I have someone who has a good mechanical knowledge on other makes (he has and rebuilt a Griffith 500) coming to look on the weekend, but was wondering if anyone here may have a suggestion as to what may have happened.
The problem is I live on the Isle of Wight and very few, if anyone, here knows or wants to know about the possibility of fixing a V6 Alfa. And it will cost a fortune to get it to the mainland just for a check.
Incidentally, on the morning of the incident I topped the engine up with oil which may have contributed if it were a dropped valve aparently, but I dont know.
The car has cost a fortune so far, and now this. Very soul destroying.
